The 2024 Tom Quilty Gold Cup: Celebrating Generations of Talent, Triumph, and Endurance

The 2024 Tom Quilty Gold Cup showcased the very best of Australian endurance riding with an event packed with thrilling moments, impressive performances, and heartwarming tributes. Held in the beautiful Wirrina Cove region of South Australia, this year’s Quilty treated riders to a meticulously designed course amidst stunning coastal views. The warm hospitality of the South Australian government and local community created an inviting atmosphere, setting the perfect stage for the rigorous 160-km ride. Competitors and attendees alike enjoyed the scenic beauty, challenging routes, and the camaraderie that defines this iconic endurance event.

An integral part of the Quilty’s success this year was Radincon’s sponsorship, which included providing the race number bibs, award rugs, and essential imaging equipment for the event’s veterinary hospital. With cutting-edge diagnostics on hand, including the GE Versana Active Diagnostic Ultrasound, the hospital veterinary team, led by Dr. Darien Feary from REC Equine Specialists, ensured the horses’ well-being was a top priority. Dr. Feary relied on Radincon’s imaging equipment to swiftly confirm that a horse with colic symptoms had no obstruction, a diagnosis that prevented an emergency surgery and exemplified the event’s high level of equine care.

Adding to the spirit of legacy and family pride, Emma Ireland continued her family’s remarkable history with the Quilty, claiming the Middleweight Division on Razorback Kellys Fire. Her grandfather, Peter Cole, won the Tom Quilty in 1983, riding the legendary Chip Chase Sadaqa (affectionately known as “Wings”), who also happens to be the grandsire of Emma’s winning horse.

Dr. Matthew Walker, veterinary surgeon and founder of Razorback Stud in 1995, has been following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, building on their Arabian stud legacy. With years of dedication, he has meticulously bred Razorback horses specifically for endurance success, aiming to produce a Quilty champion. Razorback Kellys Fire marks the first Razorback-bred horse to win the event, a milestone that speaks to Matt’s expertise and purpose-driven breeding. With the caliber of horses produced at Razorback and the teamwork with Kurrajong, this victory could well be the first of many for the stud. Emma’s win, combining her dedication with her family’s remarkable heritage, truly represents the spirit of the Quilty.

In the Heavyweight Division, Chris Geddes of Team Kurrajong Endurance also had a heartfelt journey to victory with Kurrajong Revolution. A mare bred by Chris and Joelene Cole, Revolution faced early challenges, losing her dam at just eight months old. Her father, Hillbrook Return, tragically passed away in an endurance race accident earlier this year, making Revolution’s success a touching tribute to both her sire and dam. Chris, who shod all Team Kurrajong horses, found this year’s race to be an especially emotional experience. Rising Stars and Resilient Champions

This year’s Quilty showcased outstanding performances from both seasoned champions and rising stars. In the Junior Division, Poppy Kettlewell shone on Oso Enigma, nearing an incredible milestone of 6,000 competitive kilometers—a phenomenal achievement for a young rider. Emma Ireland’s win marked a significant achievement in her first year out of the Junior Division, and with her recent Quilty win, she’s now close to 6,500 competitive kilometers, boasting a perfect completion record for her events this year.

Celebrating Horsemanship and Best Conditioned Awards

Head Veterinarian Lachlan Cameron from Cameron Veterinary Services and his team carefully evaluated contenders for the prestigious Radincon Vet’s Choice Award. After much deliberation, they selected Blakes Heaven team rider Fia Cumming, honoring her exceptional dedication to her horse’s welfare. Lachlan was especially impressed by Fia’s skilled handling in revitalizing Blakes Heaven Adventuress after signs of fatigue near the end of Leg 3, ensuring she completed the ride in excellent condition. Razorback Stud and Kurrajong horses not only triumphed in their divisions but also secured the Best Conditioned awards, highlighting the remarkable fitness and resilience of these horses, as well as the thoughtful conditioning programs that keep them at peak performance.

Completion Rates and the Future of Endurance Riding

The commendable completion rates this year were a testament to the preparation, skill, and tenacity of both riders and horses. With the continued support of sponsors like Radincon and promising young talent like Emma Ireland and Poppy Kettlewell, the future of Australian endurance riding shines brightly. From generational legacies to cutting-edge veterinary support, this year’s Tom Quilty Gold Cup celebrated the spirit of endurance, teamwork, and the unique bond between rider and horse.
