Hyena Health Check

Shout out to our friends at Sydney Zoo, where regular health checks are part of the animal welfare program. Recently it was the turn of the spotted hyenas.

Nine-year-old brothers Endesha, Etana and Enzi had full medical check-ups, and we’re glad to report they’re all in fine health!

The brothers went in one by one – each sedated and carried on a stretcher by several strong-armed keepers. They had extensive check-ups including blood tests, eye tests and dental work as well as X-ray and ultrasound examination.

Radincon, as part of their long term support of Sydney Zoo, take along the imaging equipment and accessories. You can see some of this equipment in the images on this page as well as in their video. (The milk-carton frame they used to support the X-ray is an unpatented Radincon design!)

The Zoo has faced some tough times in its short life. It opened in December 2019, but just 109 days later, had to close as part of the COVID lockdown. The Zoo reopened in June 2020, but with strict limits on the number of visitors. Over the next 18 months of on-again-off-again COVID restrictions, the team kept going and focused on their animals. Great to see the Zoo animal welfare activities and the staff dedication keeping them all happy and healthy.

Our hats go off to the Zoo for their continued commitment to the welfare of their animals even in challenging times. We’re thrilled that restrictions have lifted in 2022 and that visitor numbers are now growing steadily.

Here’s hoping both the Zoo and the hyenas continue in fine condition. And while we’re glad to support with expert and professional service and equipment, we’re also happy to leave the hyena sedation, transportation and examination to someone else!

Check out the full hyena health check video on Sydney Zoo’s Facebook page. Or if you’re in Sydney, why not visit the zoo and meet Endesha, Etana and Enzi in person?

PS If you need a setup like this, check out our portable X-ray equipment .
